Communication gap

Communication gap

KARACHI:

In today’s fast paced, high pressure world, meaningful conversations between family members are becoming increasingly rare. This lack of connection is taking a severe toll on the mental and emotional well-being of our younger generation, ultimately manifesting in a rise of severe stress, anxiety, depression and other psychiatric challenges.
Often, children feel that their voices are not truly heard, or that they are met with judgment and criticism instead of empathy when they express their struggles. When a child cannot share their daily anxieties whether from school pressures or social struggles, they are forced to internalise these heavy emotions. Over time, this emotional isolation damages their mindset, leading to feelings of inadequacy, withdrawal, and unhealthy psychological development.
A home should be a safe haven where children feel supported and understood. It is crucial that we raise awareness about the importance of mindful parenting. Parents must be encouraged to bridge this gap by spending quality time with their children, listening without immediately trying to “fix” every problem, and validating their emotions.
By cultivating an environment of open dialogue and trust, parents can effectively act as the first line of defence against youth depression and anxiety. I urge all parents, educators and community leaders to prioritise active communication, ensuring that our children do not face their psychological battles in silence.
