KARACHI:
Social media platforms like Snapchat and Instagram are becoming increasingly common in today’s society. These platforms are used for communication as well as for sharing moments with friends, which is good. However, every social media platform should be used responsibly and ethically.
A feature on Snapchat is ‘streaks’ where users send pictures or videos to each other every day and maintain a message streak. My concern is that some people carelessly open their camera and take random pictures or videos without paying attention to people who might be appearing in the frame. Similarly, people who post media of public places on Instagram do not care about who appears in their shot. This is a clear violation of others’ privacy and can make them feel uncomfortable if they were to find out.
Our morality teaches us the difference between right and wrong, and it’s applicable to social media usage as well. We ought to respect other people’s right to privacy even in public spaces and be mindful of what we capture. The responsible use of social media creates a safer and more respectful environment for everyone.
