KARACHI:
Dr Akash Kumar, a young doctor practising at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), was killed in cold blood during a robbery near Clifton on Monday. The outlaws also robbed him of Rs2.5 million and fled the scene without facing any resistance. This cold-blooded murder led to the closure of the road near Teen Talwar — where the unfortunate incident occurred — by his enraged heirs and the Young Doctors’ fraternity, who demanded justice for the victim’s blood, bringing traffic to a standstill.
Statements of condemnation, however numerous, are not enough. Only apprehending the outlaws and awarding them exemplary punishment under the law of the land can bring the lasting, durable peace essential to the smooth running of citizens’ day-to-day affairs.
The deteriorating law-and-order situation in Sindh in general, and in Karachi in particular, has become a cause of grave concern for peace-loving, law-abiding, tax-paying citizens. If saviours like Dr Akash Kumar — destined to serve suffering humanity — are shot dead by criminal elements pursuing petty, self-serving interests, who will be left to treat and heal the patients? Protecting the innocent lives of its citizens, come what may, should remain the state’s first and foremost priority in maintaining law and order.
