KARACHI:
Imagine a school where children are expected to learn, but instead they live in fear of being hit or humiliated for making a mistake. While some people still believe that corporal punishment teaches discipline, it actually leaves emotional scars and creates fear instead of respect. A child cannot learn well in an environment of violence. That is why corporal punishment has no place in schools and should be banned everywhere.
Physical punishment does not teach children right from wrong. When adults use violence, children may think it is an acceptable way to solve problems. Studies also show that children who face corporal punishment are more likely to become aggressive and suffer from anxiety or depression. It also damages the trust between children and their teachers or parents.
Attitudes are changing around the world. The United Nations considers corporal punishment a violation of children’s rights and many countries have already banned it. Instead, they promote positive discipline through clear rules, encouragement and non-violent ways of correcting behaviour. Every child deserves to learn in a safe and respectful environment. Banning corporal punishment will make schools happier, safer and better places for learning.
