Shaping children

Shaping children

KARACHI:

It goes without saying that the strength of any nation lies in the character of its children and that character is shaped first and foremost at home. Francis Bacon’s essay ‘Of Parents and Children’ remains remarkably relevant to present-day Pakistan, where rapid social change, economic pressures and digital distractions are reshaping family life.
As an educationist, I believe that many parents, overwhelmed by financial responsibilities and busy routines, are unable to devote sufficient time to their children’s moral and emotional development. As a result, many youngsters turn to social media and online influencers for guidance instead of their parents and teachers. The growing incidence of screen addiction, intolerance and disrespect should serve as a wake-up call for society.
Bacon reminds us that children are not merely a source of happiness but also a sacred responsibility. Parents must nurture their children with love, discipline and sound moral values, while schools and the media should complement these efforts by fostering critical thinking, empathy and civic responsibility. According to William Wordsworth, “the child is father of the man.” The future of Pakistan will be determined by the values we impart in our children today.
