HEC scholarship funds delayed

HEC scholarship funds delayed

KARACHI:

The delay in the release of funds under the HEC Undergraduate Scholarship Programme for Balochistan and ex-FATA is a cause for serious concern. This programme was initiated to facilitate the deserving students to avail higher education at a tuition cost of up to Rs200,000, including hostel charges. Moreover, a monthly allowance of Rs12,000, annual book allowance of Rs12,000 and a monthly travel allowance of Rs10,000 is also granted under the programme which aims to eliminate financial obstacles, foster educational opportunities, enhance employment opportunities and ensure educational equity within the region. Sadly, these worthy goals continue to be thwarted by the continued failure to release funds.
I am one of the successful scholars of the Batch-IV (2025). Currently studying at COMSATS University Islamabad in the fourth semester, I have still to receive funds for the third semester due which I am unable to register for my fourth-semester courses. When approached, the university’s scholarship office told me that COMSATS does not offer fee relaxation because the scholarships funds from HEC are at times delayed by up to one year.
Scholarships should help students pay for their education, not put a strain on them. The ongoing delays are adding to the stress, affecting the academic progress of those who have qualified for the scholarship on merit. I request the HEC to ensure release of the scholarship funds in time and make an effective coordination mechanism with the universities. It goes without saying that the future of hundreds of talented students is at risk due to the bureaucratic delays at the HEC.
