Safeguarding journalists

Safeguarding journalists

KARACHI:

Journalism in Pakistan has become an increasingly perilous profession, especially for independent reporters who risk everything to highlight the truth. From exposing local corruption scandals to documenting human rights violations, journalists routinely face severe blowback and legal harassment under draconian laws. Instead of receiving state protection, those who dare to question the powerful are frequently silenced.
This hostile environment creates an environment of fear, forcing widespread self-censorship and crippling the public’s constitutional right to unbiased information. Digital media platforms have only multiplied these threats, leaving investigative reporters exposed to relentless online smear campaigns. Independent journalism simply cannot survive in an ecosystem dominated by systemic fear. Law enforcement agencies and judicial bodies must urgently implement robust institutional frameworks to protect press freedom and safeguard field reporters.
Ensuring the absolute safety of media workers is a fundamental prerequisite for a functioning democracy. The state must also hold perpetrators accountable to ensure that truth does not become a permanent casualty in our society.
