KARACHI:
The psychological stress experienced by female students who travel alone deserves serious attention. As a female student, I have personally experienced this fear while traveling alone. I have encountered unwanted staring, inappropriate comments and harassment in public places. These experiences have left me feeling anxious, uncomfortable and constantly alert throughout my journey. Unfortunately, many other female students face similar situations every day. Moreover, the increasing reports of rape and sexual assault cases in the country have further intensified feelings of fear and insecurity.
In a society where girls already face many challenges in accessing education, an unsafe environment and the constant fear of harassment create additional psychological stress, making it even more difficult for female students to continue their education with confidence. Such circumstances not only discourage young women from pursuing higher education but also reinforce harmful social barriers that limit their opportunities.
The government, law enforcement agencies, educational institutions, civic organisations and the general public need to collaborate to address this issue. Strict action should be taken against harassment; security in public transport and around educational institutions should be improved; awareness campaigns should be conducted to promote respect for women and discourage gender-based harassment; and counseling and support services should also be made available for students who experience such incidents.
The concerned authorities should take immediate and effective measures to ensure that every girl can step out of her home with confidence, dignity and peace of mind.
