KARACHI:
Pakistan has consistently advocated for diplomacy over military escalation and communication over conflict. Together with allied nations and international partners, our civilian and military leadership continues to work diligently to create the conditions necessary for a long-term resolution between the US and Iran. Encouragingly, recent comments from US President Donald Trump regarding the potential for a negotiated agreement with Iran have sparked cautious optimism. These signals indicate that diplomacy remains active and that a compromise is still attainable. Positive statements from key stakeholders suggest that the goal is neither unrealistic nor unattainable, despite the evident challenges on the path to peace.
However, each time Washington and Tehran appear to be nearing a diplomatic agreement, other developments have stalled the process. Israel’s escalating operations against Lebanon further complicate these already tenuous negotiations. Such incidents risk undermining diplomatic progress and reinforcing extreme viewpoints on all sides. Consequently, the US has a crucial role in preventing further escalation, given its influence and strategic relationships in the region. Washington should advocate for moderation and discourage actions that could jeopardise ongoing diplomatic efforts through its diplomatic channels.
As Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif rightly stated, “Peace and diplomacy offer far brighter prospects than violence and destruction.” The resulting human suffering and economic dislocation have already affected countries far beyond the Middle East. The world cannot afford to endure another cycle of war. Peace must not only be pursued but also afford every opportunity to succeed.
