Authoritarian parenting

Authoritarian parenting

KARACHI:

Research conducted around the world has consistently shown that harsh discipline, emotional neglect and aggressive parenting can have long-lasting consequences on children’s mental health, academic performance and social development. In Pakistan, corporal punishment and authoritarian parenting styles remain common in many households despite growing awareness about their harmful effects.
Children raised in stressful home environments are more likely to suffer from anxiety, depression, low self-esteem and behavioural problems. These challenges often contribute to poor academic performance, school dropout rates, substance abuse and even involvement in crime later in life. The effects extend beyond individual families and ultimately impact society as a whole.
To address this issue, the government should launch nationwide parenting-awareness campaigns and provide accessible counselling services for families. Schools should organise regular parent-teacher workshops to educate parents about positive discipline, emotional support and child development. Community organisations, religious leaders and media outlets can also play a vital role in promoting healthier parenting practices.
The future of Pakistan depends not only on what children learn in schools but also on how they are raised at home. By investing in positive parenting today, we can build a healthier, safer and more productive society tomorrow.
