KARACHI:
The Pakistani public at large, especially the corporate sector, welcomes the privatisation of PIA, which has been ill-run for decades. Now that a private consortium of different business houses has taken over, I strongly suggest that they do not keep PIA’s HR department in Karachi. This may sound absurd, but we are all familiar with how the new owners could be harassed or coerced into employing their ‘favourites,’ not to mention the prevalence of nepotism in such situations.
The HR department should be based in Islamabad, where all cadres i.e. blue-collar and white-collar employees can be tested and evaluated. No hiring or firing authority should be vested in Karachi. This is my considered advice to the new owners, and I wish them every success.
