Steep rents

Letter June 29, 2026
Steep rents

KARACHI:

Many students come from interior Sindh to Karachi for higher studies. They live in hostels and rented flats, paying thousands in rent, food, travel and other expenses. Yet hostel and flat owners raise rents every year, forcing students to manage these costs amid inflation.
The students who are already stressed due to living away from home and academic workload throughout the year face an even heavier mental burden due to this financial pressure. On top of that, the petrol crisis and frequent price hikes continue to burden them, especially with increased travel fares from their respective hometowns to Karachi.
I request the Sindh government to intervene. Hold consultations with interior Sindh students and ensure affordable housing, food and other basic utilities so their education is not abandoned. In addition, the Sindh motor vehicle authorities must also reduce fares and enforce the 50% concession rule for interior Sindh and all other students in Karachi.
