No facilities

Letter June 25, 2026
No facilities

KARACHI:

Public hospitals serve as the primary source of healthcare for low-income families, yet they continue to struggle with numerous problems. However, government hospitals across the country – particularly in Balochistan – often face overcrowding, forcing patients to wait hours and even share bed. Essential medicines, medical equipment and diagnostic facilities are frequently unavailable, compelling patients to purchase costly treatments from private pharmacies. In many cases, a shortage of doctors, nurses and support staff further reduces the quality of healthcare services.
Pakistan spends a relatively small percentage of its GDP on healthcare compared to global standards, resulting in inadequate facilities and limited resources. The situation becomes even more difficult in remote areas where healthcare infrastructure is weak and access to specialists is limited.
The federal and provincial governments should increase healthcare funding, ensure the availability of medicines, recruit more medical professionals, improve hospital management, and strictly monitor staff attendance.
