KARACHI:
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has reported that at least 405 honour killings were recorded in Pakistan in 2024. Furthermore, 268 people were killed in honour-related crimes across the country between January and May 2025. These figures demonstrate that honour killing remains a serious and persistent human rights issue despite legal reforms and growing public awareness.
The continuation of such crimes reflects deep-rooted gender discrimination and misuse of cultural traditions. No concept of honour can justify the taking of a human life. Every individual has the right to make personal choices regarding education, marriage and career without fear of violence.
There is an urgent need for strict implementation of laws, speedy justice for victims and widespread awareness regarding women’s rights and human dignity. Educational institutions, media organisations, religious scholars and civil society must work together to challenge harmful practices and promote respect for human life.
