Intentional posting

KARACHI:

A few months ago, a citizen landed in jail due to a social media post made during a sensitive time in terms of national security. It made me ponder over our careless use of social media and how that can prove to be detrimental to us.
We all post memes, opinions and jokes online. But during security alerts or sensitive times, one careless post can create a huge problem. Sharing rumours, hateful comments or sensitive security details can land us in legal trouble where we can easily be crippled by fines or even jailtime. The law does not see it as ‘just a post’.
I do not believe that we should stop speaking up against civilian matters that concern us. But I do think that we should pause before we post and think about its consequences. Let us use social media responsibly. While our freedom of speech is important, so is our safety and the safety of others.
