Pink tax

Letter June 15, 2026
Pink tax

KARACHI:

The federal budget 2026-27 has brought great news for women in Pakistan. The government wants to remove the sales tax on sanitary pads and other feminine hygiene products. The removal of this tax is necessary as menstruation is a part of life but many young girls and women, particularly from poorer families, are unable to access the necessary health paraphernalia. By removing this tax, the government is sending a message: women’s health is important. It will make these essential products more affordable and accessible to women.
Menstrual hygiene is connected to a woman’s dignity, education and overall health. When sanitary products are affordable, girls are less likely to miss school when they have their periods and women can take care of their health without worrying about expenses.
However, just removing the tax is not enough. The government needs to make sure that the prices of sanitary products go down as well. It must also conduct awareness campaigns in rural areas for women’s health. Schools should have sanitary products and a culture of shame and taboo revolving around this issue must end; menstrual health should be a part of the education system.
This change may seem small. But for millions of women and girls in Pakistan, it is a big step forward. Today we have a reason to celebrate: a step towards dignity, equality and better health for women in Pakistan.
