Acid brutality

KARACHI:

The recent acid attack on Dr Mahnoor at Civil Hospital Quetta has shocked the nation and drawn attention to the serious dangers that women continue to face, even within professional environments. Reports indicate that she sustained severe burn injuries and was transferred for specialised medical treatment.
Violence against women remains a serious challenge across Pakistan. According to official data presented in the National Assembly, more than 173,000 cases of violence against women were reported between 2021 and 2024. Balochistan itself accounted for hundreds of these cases. Women serve society as doctors, teachers, students, journalists and public servants. Their contributions are invaluable, yet many continue to live and work under the constant threat of violence. When a doctor is attacked inside a hospital, it begs the question that if professional women are not safe in their workplaces, how can ordinary women feel secure in their daily lives.
Protecting women is the moral responsibility of the state. Those responsible for such crimes must be held accountable and stronger measures should be taken to safeguard women across the country. Only then can society move towards creating a safer environment for all.
