Beyond cricket

KARACHI:

Cricket has long been the most popular sport in Pakistan enjoyed by millions of people across the country. However, the overwhelming attention given to cricket has often come at the expense of other sports. Several other sporting disciplines possess considerable potential, yet they continue to suffer from inadequate facilities and insufficient funding.
Pakistan is home to a vast pool of talented young athletes capable of competing at both national and international levels. Around the world, successful sporting nations invest in a diverse range of sports, creating opportunities for athletes to develop their abilities and pursue professional careers. Football and motorsports, for instance, attract global audiences and could provide Pakistani athletes with valuable opportunities while enhancing the country’s international sporting profile. Cricket will always remain an important part of Pakistan’s sporting identity, but the country’s future success should not depend on a single sport.
Greater attention must be given to developing and promoting other disciplines. A nation’s sporting achievements should be measured by the success of all its athletes, not solely by the accomplishments of its cricketers and a few athletes.
