Neglected workers

Neglected workers

KARACHI:

Balochistan’s workers continue to face dangerous and often life-threatening conditions, particularly in coal mines, construction projects and industrial workplaces. Thousands of labourers risk their lives daily due to inadequate safety measures and weak enforcement of labour regulations.
Reports indicate that Balochistan has tens of thousands of coal miners working in thousands of registered and unregistered mines. Fatal accidents caused by mine collapses, methane gas explosions and poor ventilation claim dozens of lives each year, while hundreds of workers suffer permanent disabilities. Many labourers also endure extreme temperatures exceeding 45°C without adequate drinking water, protective equipment or medical facilities.
The government must strengthen labour inspections, enforce workplace safety standards, provide modern safety equipment and ensure compensation for victims and their families. No worker should lose their life simply because proper safety measures were ignored.
