Low-paid cops

Letter May 31, 2026
Low-paid cops

KARACHI:

The most powerful institutions in society should be independent and financially secure. However, in Pakistan, a policeman’s salary is often lower than that of a street vendor. How can a police officer survive on such a modest income and provide for his family? If a criminal helps a policeman financially, it becomes difficult for that officer to act impartially against him. Such a situation creates an obstacle for the proper implementation of law and order. It is unfortunate that laws are enforced more strictly against the common man than against wealthy businessmen or powerful individuals.
A policeman is also an ordinary citizen. He should receive a fair salary, proper medical care and accommodation facilities similar to those provided to members of the armed forces. Let us not forget that police officers too play a vital role in governance. Like others, policemen also have families to support. They must pay for food, education and other household expenses. Therefore, they should be paid enough to meet their needs and live with dignity. If policemen are financially secure, they will be less likely to accept bribes and will be able to perform their duties with integrity. This will benefit both citizens and national security.
Efforts must be made to reform our police force and ensure that its members receive the respect and resources they deserve. Once policemen are free from financial pressures, they will be better able to carry out their responsibilities. A strong and well-supported police force is essential for maintaining law and order.
