KARACHI:
In the modern world, economic growth is no longer possible through the traditional sector alone. Although the traditional sector, especially agriculture, remains important, developed countries have shifted their focus to industrialisation. In an increasingly competitive global economy, developing countries like Pakistan must design effective policies to drive economic development.
One way is through urbanisation. Urban areas provide greater job opportunities and skilled workers are highly valued there. One of the major problems in rural areas is low wages. Skilled workers in rural areas are often paid poorly which causes them to lose motivation and prevents them from giving their best performance. The efficiency and productivity of workers largely depend on the wages they receive as wages help them fulfil their daily needs.
But simply urbanisation is not enough. Policies should be designed in a way that includes rural areas in development process. Technological advancements should be introduced in rural areas, especially in the agricultural sector, so that productivity and economic growth can both be efficiently improved.
