KARACHI:
In today’s competitive world, students face intense pressure as they are expected to achieve high grades and be successful in their professional life. There is intense competition for every seat at universities. Besides, growing financial problems these days add to the academic pressure on students amid an overwhelming fear of failure – all contributing to stress, anxiety and depression, in some cases.
There are students who suffer from physical and mental fatigue – more so because consulting a psychiatrist is still considered a taboo in our society. While there is huge emphasis on grades both at schools and homes, but none at all on mental health. The increasing pressure on students not only affects their academic performance but also their confidence and motivation to succeed.
The authorities must pay attention to this issue by at least launching counseling services and mental health awareness campaigns to avoid it from assuming epidemic proportions. A country cannot rise while its youth suffers from mental health issues. It is time to take this issue seriously.
