Reliance on solar energy

Letter May 16, 2026
Reliance on solar energy

KARACHI:

Fed up with excessive load-shedding of power and rising electricity bills, people started shifting to solar as a cheap and reliable alternative. The trend saw a boost especially after the 2022 power supply crisis. This tendency to depend upon solar has yielded results as it has not just rid the public of unbearable bills and load-shedding, it has also helped the country deal effectively with the fuel crisis amid the ongoing Middle East war.
It is time for the government to proactively start dealing with IPPs which are nothing but a burden on Pakistan’s economy. The country can’t sustain electricity made from imported fuel and gas as their prices are unlikely to come down in near future. Shifting to alternative sources as well as introducing reforms in the power sector are the only ways to get rid of the menacing circular debt and provide relief to common citizens.
