Digital literacy for all

Letter May 13, 2026
Digital literacy for all

KARACHI:

Recent records show that Pakistan has adopted online learning and digital technology in education very rapidly, especially in the wake of Covid-19. However, the rural areas of Pakistan are still left behind in this race. While schools in cities are coming up with smart classrooms and new techniques that make learning far easier, government schools are even deprived of basic facilities like electricity, water, furniture, equipment, computers and internet access.
According to Alif Ailaan Education Foundation, less than 15% of schools in rural parts of the country are capable of imparting any form of digital literacy. The relevant authorities must focus on rural students and take steps to ensure digital literacy for all. Teachers should also be trained to acquire digital skills. This will help remove a major barrier to achieving equality in the education sector.
