KARACHI:
It’s for the first time that BJP has come to power in Bengal – one of the five most populous states in India which are also crucial in government formation at the federal level. While it is the hard work of the party cadre as well as Narendra Modi’s charisma that led to the victory, some blunders committed by Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress also worked in the BJP’s favour. These blunders include excessive oppression of the BJP cadre in the state; appeasement of minorities; anti-Hindu rhetoric; and allowing millions of Muslim refugees from Bangladesh into the state in a bid to add to their vote bank.
It’s a fact that the BJP is gaining popularity in Bengal due to its focus on development. One major thing that worked in its favour is avoiding increase in the rates of petrol and diesel despite acute shortage due to the US-Iran War. The BJP is becoming so popular in India that it looks as if opposition parties will not be able to defeat it even in the next 15 years.
