KARACHI:
Pakistan's historical sites are not merely remains of the past; they represent the country's rich cultural identity and ancient civilizations. However, many national heritage sites are now under threat due to poor conservation and lack of proper care.
According to concerns raised by UNESCO, several historical sites are endangered because of improper restoration methods. The frequent use of cement in repairs damages these structures because it traps moisture and causes further deterioration over time. Another major issue is the shortage of skilled conservation experts and proper supervision.
Weak institutions, lack of accountability and short-term planning further worsen the condition of these heritage sites. Practical steps must be taken to improve preservation efforts on all these fronts.
