Water pollution

KARACHI:

The escalating water pollution crisis in Pakistan is a cause for serious concern. The issue poses a severe threat to public health, environmental sustainability and overall well-being of our nation. The situation is dire. According to recent reports, a staggering 80% of Pakistan’s water resources are contaminated. This pollution stems from a variety of sources including:
Industrial wastes: Untreated industrial effluents often containing heavy metals and toxic chemicals are discharged directly into rivers, lakes and groundwater. This leads to water contamination. Apart from this, the excessive use of pesticides and artificial fertilisers also pollutes water bodies.
Sewage and water disposal: Inadequate sewage treatment facilities and improper water disposal practices contribute significantly to water contamination. Diseases such as typhoid, cholera and hepatitis are rampant, particularly in vulnerable communities. Aquatic ecosystems are severely damaged due to this, resulting in a decline in biodiversity and loss of valuable resources.
The relevant authorities should take immediate steps to address this escalating crisis in Pakistan.
