KARACHI:
A living heritage of identity and continuity
Language is not merely a means of communication; it is the identity, history and collective memory of a people. Sindhi, one of the oldest languages of South Asia, reflects a rich cultural and intellectual heritage that has evolved over thousands of years. Rooted in the Indus Valley civilisation, it has absorbed influences from Sanskrit, Persian and Arabic, making it both diverse and resilient.
A defining moment in the modern history of Sindhi came during British rule. After the annexation of Sindh in 1843, the need for a standardised administrative language led to a historic decision. On April 24, 1848, Sindhi was officially recognised and its script standardised. This transformed Sindhi into the language of education, courts and governance, strengthening its literary and intellectual foundations. April 24 thus stands as a symbol of the language’s formal recognition and development.
Sindhi literature further enriches its legacy. The works of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, Sachal Sarmast and Sami promote values of love, tolerance and humanity, reflecting the true spirit of Sindhi culture. In the modern era, the Sindhi Language Authority has played a vital role in preserving and promoting the language. Established in 1991 by the Government of Sindh, it focuses on research, standardisation, publications and literary activities. It also organises seminars and conferences, fostering academic and cultural engagement.
Encouragingly, in recent months, under its present leadership, the Sindhi Language Authority has become more active and dynamic. Its increased outreach, digital initiatives and academic programmes reflect a renewed commitment to making Sindhi relevant in today’s world. The integration of Sindhi into digital platforms and Unicode has further expanded its reach among younger generations.
Despite these efforts, challenges remain due to globalisation and the dominance of major languages. Preserving Sindhi requires both institutional support and personal commitment.
