KARACHI:
The heavy weight of their school bags s an important issue affecting school children. It is common to see very young students carrying bags filled with a lot of books, often far heavier than what they should carry at their age. This not only causes physical strain but also affects their energy and focus even before the school day begins.
Medical experts have also raised concerns about increasing cases of back and shoulder pain among children due to the heavy bags they carry to the school and then bring back home. In a city like Karachi, where the weather is already harsh, carrying such heavy loads daily makes things even more difficult for students ageing as low as seven to eight. Many countries have already introduced digital learning systems where textbooks are available on tablets or other devices, reducing the need for heavy bags.
The relevant authorities like the Sindh Textbook Board and educational institutions should take steps to introduce digital textbooks, at least gradually. Schools can also plan lighter schedules or dedicate certain days as "bag-free days" to reduce the burden. As one more solution, in the meantime, the schools should make arrangements for students to keep most of the book in their desks in the classroom and only carry back the ones that are the most needed on a the given day. The goal should be to make learning easier and healthier for children.
The authorities concerned as well as parents and schools should take this issue seriously and work towards a practical solution for the well-being of students.
