Electricity tariffs

Letter April 24, 2026
Electricity tariffs

KARACHI:

The citizens of Karachi are heavily burdened with the continuous increase in electricity tariffs. Almost every few weeks, there is a new ‘fuel adjustment’ or surcharge, which has made it extremely difficult for the common person to manage basic expenses.
As someone trying to run a small setup in this city, I see these struggles closely. This issue is no longer limited to luxury usage; it is affecting small shop owners, students and local businesses that form the backbone of our economy. When an electricity bill becomes higher than house rent or even a person’s salary, it becomes a serious concern for survival.
On one hand, we are encouraged to move towards a digital future, but on the other hand, even basic electricity needed for a laptop or internet connection is becoming unaffordable. Constant changes in pricing make it very difficult to plan household budgets or run any business smoothly.
I urge the authorities and the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority to understand that the public has reached its limit. Instead of putting more pressure on regular billpayers, efforts should be focused on reducing power theft and fixing inefficiencies in the system. I hope the concerned authorities will take serious notice of this issue and provide relief to the public.
