KARACHI:
The Sindh Government’s pink scooty scheme encourages women to apply for the sake of ‘women empowerment’ and ‘self-dependency’. Indeed, the idea is a powerful one. 200 scooties have already been distributed which is wonderful. However, is Pakistani culture allowing women to travel safely? In this environment, is it safe for women to travel alone when men need a mere excuse to make them feel uncomfortable? Moreover, focusing initiatives on women creates an imbalance in a culture like Pakistan’s. Why is there no cooking scheme or domestic chores scheme for men? Are men self-sufficient?
Our government is taking initiatives which are great opportunities for women. But why must women carry all the burden? In this economy, they are now expected to work from 9-5, then be responsible for cooking, cleaning and washing after they come home. And everyone is excited about the prospect of free scooties. Pakistan has a specific set of norms and values and rushing to support only one side will eventually make things even more unjust. After some time, women will be pressurised to handle all facets of life alone.
Instead, the government should introduce workshops, training opportunities and seminars on topics such as mental health, household responsibilities, value of relationships, coping with stress, ethics and respecting women. Our culture requires investment in basic values; only then can women truly be empowered.
