Emergency ward

Letter April 21, 2026
Emergency ward

KARACHI:

An emergency ward is meant to save lives but when the very place of healing becomes a source of suffering, it reflects a grave failure of responsibility that can no longer be ignored.
The condition of our civil hospital’s emergency ward is deeply alarming. Broken beds, unhygienic surroundings, and a lack of basic cleanliness have turned this critical facility into a hazardous space. Patients who arrive seeking urgent care are instead exposed to infections and discomfort, worsening their condition rather than improving it.
The situation is even more distressing for women. The absence of proper privacy in the emergency ward is not just neglect, it is a violation of dignity. Female patients are forced to endure treatment in open, uncomfortable environments where their basic right to privacy is ignored. This reflects a serious gap in both management and humanity.
Emergency wards are not optional facilities, they are the backbone of any healthcare system. Immediate action is not optional, but mandatory. Authorities must fix these conditions, ensure cleanliness and protect patient dignity, especially of women. An emergency ward should save lives, not endanger them.
