Post-operation care

Letter April 20, 2026
Post-operation care

KARACHI:

Many patients assume that the most critical part of treatment ends once surgery is over. When in reality, the post-operative period can be equally vital.
As a doctor working in cardiothoracic surgery, I frequently see patients develop complications due to electrolyte imbalances, particularly low potassium and magnesium levels. These may appear minor but can lead to serious consequences, including dangerous heart rhythm disturbances and delayed recovery. Despite this, awareness about post-surgical monitoring remains limited among patients and caregivers.
Greater emphasis must be placed on educating patients about the importance of follow-up care, timely blood tests and adherence to medical advice. Recovery does not end in the operating room; careful management afterward is essential to prevent avoidable complications.
