Unaffordable solar

Letter April 12, 2026
Unaffordable solar

KARACHI:

The increasing rates of solar panels and petrol are causing endless problems for farmers in cultivation, making it difficult for them to earn a living. Farmers have limited options for irrigation canals, generators and solar panels. Canal water is scarce due to lack of rain and dams holding back water. The Meran dam in Dasht is a case in point, with plans to divert its water to Gwadar, leaving farmers without a reliable source.
Solar panels, a viable alternative, are becoming increasingly unaffordable and only wealthy farmers have access them. Generators are another option, but they require petrol or diesel, which are both extremely expensive.
The situation is unfair, where only rich farmers are able to cultivate and the poor ones are struggling. I urge the government to provide canal water for irrigation, make solar panels more affordable or offer alternatives to petrol and diesel.
