Yet again, our healthcare system stands exposed – in a weird way this time. A few days ago, we watched a video clip circulating on social media in which two teams of doctors were locked in a race at an operation theatre of Lady Willingdon Hospital, Lahore. The two teams were performing C-section surgeries on two patients and trying to outdo each other for reaching the finishing line. Even more shameful is the fact that all this was recorded on camera pretty proudly.
Needless to mention that this “race” poses a big question mark on the ethics, integrity and professionalism of the medics. Watching the video, I was wondering who would be responsible in case of anything going wrong in the whole hustle and bustle at what is supposed to be a calm and quiet operation theatre with focused professionals. One could clearly see in the video that there was a kind of war going on between the two sides which seemed to care a damn about anything bad that could potentially happen to the patients being operated upon.
This unethical act clearly shows the immaturity on the part of the doctors at the hospital for which the high-ups are equally responsible. The provincial government has reportedly taken notice of the shameful incident. And I strongly believe that all those involved should be made an example of so that something like this could never be repeated.
