The ongoing tensions involving the US, Israel and Iran have rendered the lives of people in the Middle East increasingly precarious, underscoring the urgent need for de-escalation. War is not a viable solution to disputes; rather, sustainable resolution lies in meaningful negotiations. Armed conflict inevitably results in the loss of human lives and destruction of property — losses that are irreparable and cannot be compensated.
In such a climate of devastation, initiatives aimed at peace talks are both timely and commendable. As a responsible state in the region, Pakistan has consistently demonstrated its commitment to peace. During last year’s tensions with India, Pakistan welcomed international efforts, including those by the US, to broker a ceasefire. Despite possessing the capacity to escalate the situation further, Pakistan exercised restraint in the broader interest of regional stability. The international community witnessed the professionalism and resolve of Pakistan’s armed forces, particularly its air force, which contributed to compelling a cessation of hostilities.
The ongoing conflict involving Iran continues to intensify, with far-reaching economic repercussions. The reported disruption around the Strait of Hormuz has led to a surge in global oil prices, exacerbating energy costs across the region and beyond. From the outset, Pakistan has played a constructive role in urging all parties towards dialogue and mutual understanding. Reports suggesting that Pakistan may host peace talks in Islamabad between the US and Iran reflect its proactive diplomatic engagement. Such efforts merit international recognition, as Pakistan continues to strive for peaceful resolution of conflicts.
It is expected that these initiatives will pave the way for a durable settlement, bringing an end to hostilities and fostering long-term peace, thereby sparing populations from further hardship and economic strain.
