Former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing to an end a remarkable career that spanned nearly two decades. The Karachi-born wicketkeeper-batter represented Pakistan in all three formats of the game. He made his ODI debut in 2007 and later debuted in Test and T20I cricket in 2010. He made his final appearance for Pakistan in a Test against Australia at Perth in 2023.
Over the course of his international career, Sarfaraz played 54 Tests, 117 ODIs and 61 T20Is, scoring a total of 6,164 runs, including six centuries and 35 half-centuries. Behind the stumps, he recorded 315 catches and 56 stumpings.
Sarfaraz’s most memorable achievement came when he led Pakistan to a historic victory in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, beating arch-rivals India by 180 runs in the final at The Oval. With that triumph, he became the first Pakistan captain to win the Champions Trophy. Earlier, he had also guided Pakistan to victory in the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2006 in Sri Lanka, making him the only Pakistani captain to win ICC titles at both junior and senior levels.
In recognition of his outstanding services, Sarfaraz was awarded the Pride of Performance in 2018, becoming the youngest Pakistan captain to receive the honour. Among his notable individual records, Sarfaraz holds the Pakistan record for most catches in a Test match, taking 10 catches against South Africa national cricket team in Johannesburg in 2019.
