Fighting through proxies

Letter March 13, 2026
Fighting through proxies

The United State of America has a history of backing militant groups who have served as its proxies helping it to achieve its strategic goals in different regions of the world. A recent case in point is HTS, a globally-designated terrorist organisation led by Ahmed Al-Shara, also known as Al-Jolani, a former Al-Qaeda member. Al-Shara, who has now become the President of Syria, was patronised by Washington to dethrone President Bashar Al Assad’s regime.

While the US lectures the world on how terrorism is detrimental to global peace, it is itself involved in patronising radical elements wherever in the world it suits them strategically. Such actions not just sit in violation of international law, they also serve to strengthen the hands of terrorists, legitimising terrorism and tyranny as a blueprint to grab power.

The US is at it again, as it is locked in a war on Iran in cahoots with Israel. There are reports of the Trump administration having contacted Kurdish militias based along the Iran-Iraq border in the semi-autonomous region offering to arm them to fight as its proxy for a regime change in the Islamic republic.

Taking cue from the US policy of patronising terrorist elements for strategic gains, India is reported to have been involved in arming and funding Afghan and Baloch terrorists to wreak havoc in Pakistan. While Fitna-al-Khwarij and Fitna-al-Hindustan – as these terrorist outfits are respectively called – are out to bleed Pakistan, they are a grave danger to the peace in the whole region and beyond.

It is time the United Nations and other international organisations took steps to check tendencies to strengthen terrorists, thus preventing parts of the world from falling into unstoppable violence. Remember we all are in the same boat. If it is Pakistan or Iran today, it can be others tomorrow – even the US and India themselves.
