In today’s fast-moving world, technology is everywhere. While it helps us in many ways, it has also changed some important habits. Handwriting skills are declining rapidly. A University of Stavanger study reports that around 40% of young people from Generation Z struggle with handwriting as digital communication replaces pen-and-paper writing. Lack of practice can also reduce fine motor skills and memory retention. Handwriting is important for learning and memory development.
Schools should encourage students to practice handwriting regularly, even in a world full of digital tools. Preserving this skill will help students think and remember better as the hand-brain connection is an extremely complex and significant component that trains our minds.
