Being a debater myself, I truly understand what debate can give to a student. Debating is a good way for a student to learn how to speak, how to express, and how to convince. Self-belief forms the core of debating.
Debating makes a person more assured and comfortable when talking to others. I can explain my whole argument in a single maxim, “Expressions speak louder than words.” This maxim also emphasises the importance of expressions, and debating is a co-curricular activity that polishes our expression.
Sadly, debate is dying in our educational institutions. Except for some well-known institutions, like Government College University Lahore, most government schools, colleges and universities are not even aware of something called debating societies. The education minister in Punjab should make sure that all public colleges and universities focus on debating so as to produce good public speakers who can then turn into the nation’s pride.
