Artificial empathy

Artificial empathy

For centuries, humans considered themselves superior because of their unique mastery of language. We have long harboured a fantasy that something other than ourselves could speak like us; a dream reflected in our fascination with talking parrots and science fiction narratives.

However, we rarely paused to consider the consequences of this dream turning into a reality. As these machines begin to mirror our most intimate traits, we must ask: what happens when the creation exceeds the emotional potential of the creator? While AI may excel at decoding the mechanics of language, it can never replicate a genuine human connection; therefore, it must remain a tool that complements rather than replaces our authentic emotional experiences.

A recent research study found in Nature Machine Intelligence states that AI chatbots can now recognise and replicate empathetic patterns more effectively than many humans. But while LLMs are excellent at assistance, their “empathy” is merely a sophisticated calculation based on data, not a reflection of a soul.

AI should be viewed strictly as a tool designed to support human needs. While AI’s performance in recognising emotional language is growing stronger, we must protect the value of authentic human empathy in our increasingly digital social contexts.
