Education emergency

Letter February 28, 2026
Education emergency

Education is the basic right of every child. It is the key to success and the progress of a country. Without education, a nation cannot develop. Sadly, millions of children in our country are still out of school. This is a very worrying situation.
In 2024, the government declared an education emergency in Pakistan. The first announcement was made on May 8 at a national conference.

It aimed to address the alarming number of out-of-school children. The second announcement was made on September 8, on International Literacy Day. Unfortunately, these announcements were not followed by strong practical steps.

Many schools in rural and poor areas do not have proper buildings, clean water, electricity or trained teachers. Some children leave school because of poverty. Many students also study in unsafe conditions without proper facilities.

The government should build more schools, especially in villages and remote areas. Free books and uniforms should be provided for poor students. Most importantly, the education emergency should be followed by serious and practical action.
