Civic sense

Civic sense

The progress of a nation depends not only on roads and buildings but also on how its citizens behave. According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, around 67% of the population in this country lacks access to proper waste management services, and only about 11% of households receive regular garbage collection. While infrastructure challenges exist, a major issue is the lack of civic responsibility among citizens.

Many people throw trash on streets and into gutters, even when dustbins are available. Public places are often misused for personal convenience, such as parking on sidewalks or blocking footpaths. This creates difficulties for pedestrians and leads to disorder in cities. Such behaviour not only makes areas look untidy but also increases the risk of accidents, spreads diseases and lowers the overall quality of life.

Civic sense is about respecting shared spaces and understanding that public property belongs to everyone. Schools, families and the media should play an active role in teaching responsibility, cleanliness and respect for others. At the same time, local authorities should ensure proper waste management systems and enforce regulations strictly.

If citizens begin taking responsibility for their surroundings, our cities and towns can become cleaner, safer and healthier places for all. Real progress begins with responsible behaviour.
