The holy month is a time for reflection, community and the cherished tradition of breaking our fast with dates. However, this year, many families are finding it difficult to maintain that tradition. In several markets, the price of commonly sought-after varieties has nearly doubled in just the last week.
For instance, Zahidi dates, which many rely on as an affordable option, have seen hikes of up to Rs100–120 per kg in some regions. Even premium varieties like Ajwa are reaching steep heights, with standard grades often priced between Rs5,500 and Rs7,500 per kg. While some of this is due to the simple law of supply and demand, there is a growing concern that artificial price hikes and a lack of strict market regulation are making essentials less accessible to those who need them most. It is disheartening to see financial strain cast a shadow over such a spiritual time.
The hope remains that authorities will step in with more effective price controls or that the spirit of generosity will encourage fairer pricing within the trade community.
