Alcohol sales

Letter February 09, 2026
Alcohol sales

The rapid increase in the purchase of alcohol by members of the Muslim community in Hub City is deeply alarming. Recently, I witnessed a disturbing incident while standing outside a bank where an alcohol shop is located. A boy, hardly 16 or 17 years old, arrived in a car in a great haste, entered the shop and returned moments later holding alcohol openly. The ease with which a minor was able to buy such a harmful substance was shocking. This was not an isolated incident. A large number of Muslims are seen purchasing alcohol regularly, yet there appears to be no effective restriction or monitoring.

Alcohol consumption not only poses serious health risks but also contributes to irresponsible and disorderly behaviour, particularly among youth. What makes the situation even more concerning is the notice displayed at the shop stating, “Muslims are not allowed.” If Muslims can freely enter and purchase alcohol, what purpose does this warning serve? Where are the authorities tasked with enforcing the law? This troubling trend demands immediate attention from law enforcement agencies, community leaders and parents alike. Ignoring it will only deepen social and moral challenges in our society.
