Gas-producing Sui

Letter January 29, 2026
Gas-producing Sui

It is a bitter irony that Sui gas — discovered, extracted and supplied from the soil of Balochistan — continues to illuminate kitchens and industries in other provinces, while the very people living in the gas-producing areas remain deprived of this basic facility. Decades after the discovery of Sui gas, thousands of households in Balochistan still rely on firewood and other primitive fuels for cooking and heating.

This deprivation is not merely an inconvenience; it is a grave injustice. The lack of access to natural gas has severely affected the quality of life of the local population, forcing women and children to endure health hazards caused by smoke and indoor pollution. Moreover, excessive reliance on firewood has accelerated environmental degradation, further compounding the hardships faced by an already marginalised region.

Despite contributing immensely to the national energy supply and economy, Balochistan has received little in return. This persistent neglect has fostered a deep sense of alienation, frustration and mistrust among the people. Provision of Sui gas to the local population would not only improve living standards but also promote socio-economic development and strengthen the bond between the state and the people of Balochistan. Justice, equity and constitutional responsibility demand that the owners of the resources be the first beneficiaries.

The authorities concerned must take immediate steps to ensure the supply of Sui gas to Balochistan, particularly to gas-producing areas.
