Justice delayed

Letter January 23, 2026
Justice delayed

A society is judged not by its slogans, but by how it treats its most vulnerable and right now, we are failing. The reported rape of a girl in Jacobabad police station, allegedly by six policemen, is not just a crime but a complete collapse of the state’s moral and institutional authority. When those entrusted with protection become perpetrators of violence, the question is no longer who is safe and where, but is anyone safe at all?

This incident is not only about individual criminals; it is about state failure. It is about a government that claims to protect its citizens but repeatedly fails to ensure accountability within its own institutions. What message does this send to women across the country? That even the walls meant to protect them cannot be trusted? That justice depends on power and influence?

There must be no room for compromise, settlement or protection based on status or connections. Justice delayed is justice denied. This crime demands immediate and decisive action. The government must immediately arrest and suspend all accused policemen, order an independent judicial inquiry and ensure a fast-track trial with strict punishment. Anything less will confirm that even police stations are no longer safe and that the state is unwilling to protect its citizens.
