The US president’s New Year resolution was “peace on Earth”. Sadly, in just three days into the New Year, the US took aggressive action against Venezuela in an attempt to capture President Nicolás Maduro and the first lady. This clearly shows the contradiction between claims of peace and actual actions. Venezuela was targeted mainly because of its oil and natural resources. This is not surprising, as the US has followed the same pattern in the past by targeting Middle Eastern countries rich in oil, which later suffered war, destruction and long-term instability.
Delcy Rodríguez, a lawyer, diplomat and vice president of Venezuela strongly criticised US actions. She stated that the attack on Venezuela and the attempt to capture Nicolás Maduro involved Israel. Nicolás Maduro has openly supported Palestine, and many videos of him expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people are now circulating online. Since the Gaza war began, Venezuela has continued to support Palestine. Venezuela officially recognised Palestine in 2009 and was one of the first American countries to do so.
The US president, who has shown interest in receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, cannot be called a man of peace while funding Israel with billions of dollars used to bomb innocent Palestinian civilians. The US has spent trillions on wars around the world, yet it continues to speak of peace. It is troubling that PM Shehbaz Sharif nominated the US president for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, calling him a “man of peace” despite knowing that the ongoing genocide in Gaza is being carried out with weapons funded by the US.
Peace cannot exist where war is funded, and justice cannot survive where power is placed above human lives.
