The footpaths in Karachi have disappeared. They have been almost entirely occupied by vendors, stalls and parked carts, forcing pedestrians onto the dangerous main roads. This not only causes inconvenience, but also poses a serious safety hazard.
Elderly people, children, and those with disabilities are forced to navigate between moving traffic and encroachments, risking accidents. What should be a safe public space for walking has been privatised for commercial gain, with no regard for public safety or convenience.
While we sympathise with individuals trying to earn a livelihood, this free-for-all cannot continue. The city authorities, particularly the KMC and local town administrations, must reclaim this public infrastructure. A balance is needed – one that designates proper vending zones without sacrificing the essential right of pedestrians to safe passage.
Immediate action is warranted to clear major pedestrian corridors. Our right to walk safely in our own city must be restored.
