The physical assault on YouTuber Rajab Butt by a group of lawyers inside the Karachi City Court premises is deeply alarming. This incident occurred immediately after his bail hearing in a case involving controversial remarks, leaving him injured with a bloodied mouth, jaw pain and a torn shirt.
Lawyers are the custodians of justice, trained to uphold the rule of law and fight battles through legal arguments in courtrooms, not through physical violence. Resorting to mob-like behaviour and taking the law into their own hands is utterly unprofessional and undermines the very foundation of our legal system. Such actions not only erode public trust in the legal fraternity but also set a dangerous precedent, suggesting that vigilante justice is acceptable within the sanctity of court premises.
Disputes must be resolved legally, not violently. Authorities, including bar associations, must investigate thoroughly and hold the perpetrators accountable to restore faith in the profession. This regrettable event tarnishes the image of lawyers as defenders of rights and highlights the need for better security and discipline in courts.
